Renewable Energy & A clear description of the Emerging Technology and where it might be in about 5-10 years :
The world is fast moving towards renewable sources of energy, especially with the spur of the Paris COP Agreement, an international accord mainly concerned with combating climate change. Out of the numerous developed alternatives in renewable energy, solar energy is on top, leading the pack. One of the most promising technologies in solar energy is Advanced Photovoltaics (APV). The ability of APV systems to convert sunlight into electricity maintains a clean, sustainable, and increasingly cost-effective solution to our energy needs. With the continued inspiration of COP meetings to international cooperation and investment in renewable energy, APV technology expansion is well-positioned to play a key role in meeting ambitious goals under the Paris Agreement.
Problems Solved by Advanced Photovoltaics:
Less Availability of Land: The conventional Solar panels require a huge amount of space for installation, which may pose some problem in cities or farmlands. With the help of new technologies, like floatovoltaics where solar panels can be placed on water, and agrivoltaics where the same land is used for the generation of solar energy as well as farming, the problem can be resolved by making better utilization of land.
Low Efficiency: The efficiency at which sunlight is normally converted to electricity by standard silicon solar panels lies in the range of 20-25%. That means much of the energy from the sun goes to waste. Newer technologies, such as perovskite-on-silicon tandem cells, boast higher efficiencies and can harvest more energy with the same amount of sunlight.
Higher Costs and Environmental Impact: Most traditional solar panels are immensely energy and material-extensive in their production, hence extremely expensive. This often offsets some of the environmental benefits of such systems. Newer technologies, like thin-film solar cells, are cheaper to produce, lighter in weight, and take fewer resources to make. This is making solar energy even more affordable and greener.
Inflexibility: Traditional solar panels are inflexible in nature. Due to this, it is quite limited where they can be installed. The new thin-film solar cells and similar latest innovations have flexible and lightweight features. That is why they can be installed on various sorts of surfaces such as car roofs and curved building facades.
Low-Light Performance: Standard solar panels do not perform well under low-light conditions, such as cloudy weather. APV technologies have greater performance in these conditions and ensure a more consistent energy supply.
Temperature Sensitivity: At elevated temperatures, standard solar panels shed much efficiency. APV technologies have incorporated advanced materials and designs into their manufacturing to reduce the consequences of these losses in efficiency.
Durability: APV panels are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including high winds, hail, and extremes of temperature. This makes them even more durable and likely to live longer than the standard solar panels
Aesthetics: Certain technologies under APV also provide options that are visually appealing, like transparent or colored panels. This will make integration into any architectural style much easier to accomplish.
